It is difficult to appreciate this rock fully, from a photo. It is made up of Obsidian, Pumice, Jasper, and at least one rock that is rich in iron. These seem to have been connected by new lava, (Tulelake Basin) and THEN, subjected to enough heat and pressure to blend and swirl some, but not all, of the different parts of the rock! I have never seen such an amazing combination of geolocic forces reflected in one rock! It even has a split (not a crack) caused by stretching while it was not yet completely solidified. Gorgeous!
ALSO -it's BIG! It is about the size of a cantaloupe. You could slice off a piece or two, to see the interior, carve a sphere of about 3" diameter, and still have enough left for a nice desk ornament.
This truly is such a cool rock!
